AACC and Nghia Sinh host Appreciation Dinner to Celebrate Asian American Heritage Month, thank AACC partners, and honor Nghia Sinh 50th Anniversary

The Vietnamese Host Committee held an Appreciation Dinner on Saturday, May 4, 2013 at Furama Restaurant, located in Chicago’s famed “Asia on Argyle” neighborhood.  Over 160 community leaders and volunteers of the Asian American Coalition of Chicago (AACC) participated in the event to celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, thank AACC partners, and honor Nghia Sinh 50th Anniversary (1963-2013).

AACC Chair Doug Nguyen opened the program with reflections of the tremendous accomplishments AAPIs have achieved, “Beginning 170 years ago, when Japanese immigrants first set foot on American shores and opened a path for millions more.  And in 1869, Chinese workers finished work on the transcontinental railroad after years of backbreaking labor.”

AACC Board President Dr. Nguyen-Trung Hieu welcomed everyone to the Appreciation Dinner.  He said, the purpose of this event is threefold: first to welcome the Asian American Heritage Month; second to thank AACC partners; and third to honor Nghia Sinh 50th Anniversary.  Dr. Hieu expressed his gratitude to the community partners and volunteer leaders for their collaboration on AACC’s various initiatives that will mutually benefit all Asian American communities.  He also thanked everyone for coming to honor Nghia Sinh 50th Anniversary Celebration (1963-2013).  Nghia Sinh has been an AACC host for 4 times in 1989, 1997, 205 and 2013, and has continuously been an AACC sponsor for 30 years.

AACC 2013 Chair Doug Nguyen followed by thanking Dr. Hieu for his outstanding leadership of the AACC board in laying down the necessary structure and vision for the organization which will last into the next generation.  He also recognized the valuable supports and generous contributions of Nghia Sinh to AACC over the past 3 decades.

The attendees viewed a presentation of the AACC’s 30th Annual Lunar New Year Conference and Celebration which took place on February 23, 2013.  In cooperation with Vietnamese organizations, Nghia Sinh served as AACC host for its 4th time.  This year AACC held a full-day conference which educated and engaged over 3000 people who attended the event.  The festivities kicked off with a community health fair, followed by an afternoon business forum and the evening gala, and concluded with the “Dancing with the Vietnamese” extravaganza.  Photos of the all-day event can be viewed at the following links:

The evening also marked the 50th Anniversary of Nghia Sinh International, a humanitarian organization founded in 1963 to promote human services and leadership education.  Nghia Sinh’s board members and volunteers joined Founder and President Dr. Nguyen-Trung Hieu on stage to cut the 50th birthday cake to commemorate the special occasion.  Dr. Hieu then remained on stage along with Doug Nguyen to distribute appreciation plaques to AACC partners and volunteer leaders which contributed to the success of the AACC Lunar New Year Conference and Celebration.

The attendees then enjoyed a delicious 7-course meal served by the dining staff of Furama.  The evening concluded with a performance by the Vietnamese Baptist Band and various traditional Karaoke performances by some of the community’s talented singers.

We hope that you, too, will take the opportunity to contribute into the lives of both the current and next generation of Asian Americans.  Together, we can overcome the problems we face and build a brighter future for all.
