Google Invests In $300 Million Underwater Internet Cable System To Japan

Google has announced that it has joined five other companies to build a trans-Pacific cable system that connects the west coast of the U.S. to the cities of Chikura and Shima in Japan. Known as FASTER, the cable system is estimated to cost $300 million. FASTER addresses the traffic demands for broadband and mobile content on the trans-Pacific route. FASTER will be designed with 6-fiber-pair cable and optical transmission technologies with an initial capacity of 60Tb/s (100Gb/s x 100 wavelengths x 6 fiber-pairs).

The other five investors in FASTER include China Mobile International, China Telecom Global, Global Transit, KDDI and SingTel. NEC, the top vendor of submarine cable systems with over 200,000 kilometers of cables, will be the system supplier for FASTER.

“At Google we want our products to be fast and reliable, and that requires a great network infrastructure, whether it’s for the more than a billion Android users or developers building products on Google Cloud Platform. And sometimes the fastest path requires going through an ocean,” said Google’s senior vice president of technical infrastructure and Google Fellow, Urs Hölzle, on Google+. “That’s why we’re investing in FASTER, a new undersea cable that will connect major West Coast cities in the US to two coastal locations in Japan with a design capacity of 60 Tbps (that’s about ten million times faster than your cable modem).”

According to Builtvisible, there are about 200 fiber optic cables in the undersea network that transports Internet data across the world — carrying more than 95% of the transoceanic voice and data traffic. In 2013, the underwater cables carried 51 billion gigabytes per month and is expected to increase to 132 billion gigabytes in four more years.

A couple of years ago, Facebook bought stake in a $450 million underwater cable consortium project called the Asia Pacific Gateway, running between Malaysia, South Korea, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong and mainland China. The Asia Pacific Gateway has a total design capacity of 54.8 Tb/s. The other 11 partners in the Asia Pacific Gateway included China Mobile, China Telecom, China Unicom, Chunghwa Telecom, KT Corp, LG Uplus, NTT Communications, StarHub, Time dotCom, Viettel and Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group (VNPT).

This is not Google’s first foray in submarine cable investments. Google also invested in the UNITY and SJC (South-East Asia Japan Cable) submarine cables in 2008 and 2011, respectively. UNITY is a 3.3Tb/s cable that connects the U.S. to Japan. The SJC is a $400 million cable system that handles up to 28Tb/s and connects 7 countries in Asia.

FASTER is expected to be ready by the second quarter of 2016. In the U.S., it will connect to hubs in Los Angeles and San Francisco, California; Portland, Oregon; and Seattle, Washington. The construction of the cable is starting immediately.
